Digital Twin for Health System Resilience

A health system resilience is needed to strengthen the Indonesia’s preparedness, response and approach to future crises, especially in events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Health Indonesia has now included health system strengthening as one of their top priorities. The new curriculum with digital technologies at its core is therefore required to upskill and train the next generation healthcare workforce, one of the determinants of health system resilience framework.

Understanding of latest digital tools, e.g., artificial intelligence (AI), can be used to help extract the key features from the current pandemic responses of Indonesia. A digital twin (DT), which will employ AI tools at its core, is a virtual representation of a system facilitating a bi-directional communication between the system and its digital representation. Examples of DTs in the reduced form of computational models are now in the public gaze, for example, COVID-19 pandemic modelling. However, developing a curriculum that applies DT technology to teaching and learning environments remains critical to future-proofing not just for Indonesian healthcare system but also UK healthcare and infrastructure (UK Innovation Strategy). The project is also expected to prepare students for health system resilience through the DT potential in the policy-making process.

Project Milestone

Digital twin is the process of analysing data that leads to decision-making through simulations and models. Digital twin has an important role in preparedness and response to a pandemic or health crisis. Department of Health Policy and Management FK-KMK UGM collaborates with Middlesex University UK and London Digital Twin Research Centre under Prof. Huan Nguyen with the aim of developing a digital twin curriculum for health system strengthening. Through this collaboration, it is hoped that it can increase capacity in anticipating crises through simulation, real time decision making, collaboration and adaptive education.

March 2022 – British Council Site Visit to UGM and Mlati II Primary Health Care

British Council Indonesia visit to Universitas Gadjah Mada and Puskesmas Mlati II for UK – Indonesia education partnerships projects including Middlesex – UGM Digital Twin for Health System Resilience, 16th – 17th March, 2022. It’s goal to achieve sustainable academic partnership. The Country Director of British Council, Hugh Moffatt discuss with dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, Vice Dean for Collaboration, Alumni, and Community Service and dr. Lutfan Lazuardi, Head of Health Policy and Management Department, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing UGM. One of key point from transnational education benefits is to support so that students will continue to come back and contribute in their country but still get good quality education from the cooperating country. UGM campus itself has good cooperation with many countries. Although they did not return to Indonesia immediately, students who had completed their studies were able to have a lot of experience there and were able to become ambassadors for Indonesia and UGM.

The role of the Puskesmas as a project partner is very important so it is necessary to involve the Puskesmas in this project a lot. Puskesmas has a relationship with the community not only curative but promotive preventive. Based on site visit to Puskesmas Mlati II, Head of the Puskesmas and staff showed that the role of the Mlati II Health Center was very good in serving its citizens when facing the crisis situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some services have also started to be digital-based to make it easier for the public to access health services.

May 2022 – 1st Workshop Digital Twin for Health System Resilience

Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada collaborates with Middlesex University and London Digital Twin Research Centre to Develop a Connected Curriculum on Digital Twin for Health System Resilience. The 1st Workshop held on Monday, 23 May 2022 at 02.00 – 03.30 pm involving stakeholders from policy makers in the health sector, development teams, and health informatics observers. It aim to obtain input from stakeholders in the health sector regarding the development of the connected curriculum structure on digital twin technology for strengthening health system resilience, both from the challenges that may be faced and the potential benefits in its implementation in the Indonesian workforce/health system.

The speakers are Prof. Huan X. Nguyen – Middlesex University discussed about ‘Digital Twin in Healthcare’; Souvik Barat – TCS Research India discussed about ‘A digital twin based approach to explore a safer return to new normal in the face of Covid19 pandemic related uncertainties’; and dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc., Ph.D., FRSPH – FMPHN UGM discussed about ‘Health System Resilience in Indonesia’.

The stakeholders present about issues in the field related to the application of digital technology from their institution to strengthen the Indonesian health system which can be used as material for student’s learning materials.
The stakeholder consist of:
Public Health Office Kulon Progo
Puskesmas Mlati 2, Sleman District
Puskesmas Samigaluh 2, Kulon Progo District
Academic Hospital UGM
Health informatics company (Sisfomedika)
